History of the New England Society for Coatings Technology

JAMES B. LORD — FATHER OF THE NEW ENGLAND SOCIETY FOR COATINGS TECHNOLOGY, INC.

Born in Kennebunk, Maine, Jim Lord was considered one of the real leaders in the coatings industry. He started in business as a traveling salesman for the Carpenter—Morton Company in 1888. Within fifteen years he was elected president of the company. In 1900 he helped organize the Boston Varnish Company, and in 1916 he resigned his office with Carpenter—Morton to devote full time to the new enterprise.

In 1915 he was elected president of the National Varnish Manufacturers Association. This subsequently developed into the Federation of Paint and Varnish Production Clubs, which today is our Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology. It was not until 1919, however, that a New England Club was formed. Mr. Lord, then president of the Paint and Oil Club of New England, suggested that a steering comnittee be formed to help organize the production and technical men of the New England paint industry into a club. This meeting was held in May, and in September the first organization meeting was held at the Boston City Club. The group was named the New England Paint and Varnish Production Club. In 1960 it became the New England Society for Paint Technology. Today, it is the New England Society for Coatings Technology, Inc.
